Abstract

The crystal and molecular structure of water oxidation catalyst has been determined from three-dimensional X-ray counter data. The complex crystallizes in the monoclinc space group C2/c with four molecules in a cell of dimensions a equals 22. 712 (9) A, b equals 13. 189 (4) A, c equals 20. 084 (5) A, beta equals 122. 08 (3) degree . The structure has been refined to a value of the weighted R factor of 0. 052 based on 2887 independent intensities with I greater than equivalent to 3 sigma (I). The structure shows that the bridging Ru-O-Ru angle is 165. 4 degree , the Ru-O bond lengths being 1. 869 (1) A. Electrochemical studies show that the Ru**I**I**I-Ru**I**I**I dimer undergoes an initial one-electron oxidation to Ru**I**I**I-Ru**I**V and that the potential of the couple has a complex pH dependence because of the acid-base properties of the two redox states.
