“Big Data” (BD) has the potential to provide critical solutions and accelerate and advance scientific research in numerous fields, including health care and medicine, environmental science, materials and manufacturing, and habit planning – but only if the challenges are addressed through collaborative, community-driven, stakeholder-aligned partnerships. Through the proposed work, Georgia Tech (GT) and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC-CH) are proposing to jointly create the South BD HUB to foster and nurture such partnerships among stakeholders in the South region and elsewhere. Through the Hub, we will launch new partnerships and coordination mechanisms to pursue big data driven multi-stakeholder projects of regional and national importance; nucleate the development of common data resources and services; create new economic opportunities within established companies and facilitate incubation of startups; address societal disparities; and develop multi-pronged strategies for the education and training of a diverse spectrum of students and those already in the workforce.
