ARRA - Seeding Postdoctoral Innocators in Research and Education (SPIRE)

Research project

Description

The SPIRE (Seeding Postdoctoral Innovators in Research and Education) program at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is requesting supplemental funds from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act initiative in order to 1) create several summer research jobs for undergraduates from our partner Minority Serving Institutions and 2) accelerate the research progress of two current SPIRE fellows in their 3rd year of support who would greatly benefit from a fourth year of devoted research time.

1)Throughout SPIRE’s history, SPIRE Scholars have been committed to mentoring undergraduate students in their research laboratories. As a result if these mentoring relationships, undergraduates from partnering Minority Serving Institutions have made presentations at national conferences, co-authored publications in science journals with SPIRE Scholars, and subsequently pursued graduate degrees in the sciences. In order to expand these successful outcomes, we propose to develop a summer research program that will provide mentored research experiences for undergraduate students from our partner MSIs. Funds are requested to support five undergraduate students from our partner MSIs for a summer research experience during Summer 2010 and five additional undergraduate students during Summer 2011.

2) The research programs of two of our SPIRE fellows would benefit from an additional year of support, during which their research progress would be greatly accelerated. Both fellows are currently in their third year of support and will have completed a year of intense training as instructors at one of our partner MSIs. THe opportunity to return to their research laboratories full time would not only facilitate their research progress but would also expand their preparation for permanent positions as independent researchers, resarch-oriented teachers and/or committed mentors for undergraduates in the sciences.
